Thomas Walenta

Thomas Walenta is a retired IBM project and program manager, working occasionally for clients seeking to improve their organizational project management capabilities. Since 2002, he has been teaching project management at the University of Applied Sciences, Darmstadt, Germany. 

Working in projects since 1974 and for IBM since 1983, Mr. Walenta decided to pursue a career in project management in 1988. He led projects, PMOs and programs for a variety of IBM customers in system integration, software, outsourcing and strategy development. From 2002, he started a program for a global electronics company in Europe. His cultural working experience is from government and the utility, insurance, banking, electronics and automotive industries, as well as geographically from most European countries, Russia, Japan, the United States and India.

Mr. Walenta has volunteered with PMI since 1998, serving as PMI Frankfurt Chapter president for almost eight years, a three-year term on PMI’s Board of Directors 2006-2008, and was a member of the PMI Ethics Review Committee since 2011, serving as chair in 2016. In parallel to these leadership roles, Mr. Walenta had global volunteer roles, for example on PMI standards development, PMI Project of the Year Award, R.E.P. application reviews and exam item writing.

His key volunteer professional awards are the PMI Fellow Award he received in 2012 and the first honorary membership of the PMI Frankfurt Chapter in 2006. 

Mr. Walenta has spoken at global conferences since 2000, with five speeches delivered in 2015 in Moscow, Panama, Sao Paulo, London and Frankfurt.

He wrote chapters for two project management compendiums in the German language, and several articles for online publications (LinkedIn and projectmanagement.com). He is one of 25 global advisors for the PM World Journal.

Mr. Walenta has a university diploma in mathematics. He received his Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification in 1998 and the Program Management Professional (PgMP) ® in 2014.
